Questions & Answers about Tämä kielto koskee ehdottomasti kaikkia vierailijoita.
Why are kaikkia vierailijoita in the partitive case here?
The verb koskea governs the partitive case when it means "to concern" or "to apply to". Since the ban "applies to" the visitors, the object must be in the partitive.
What if we used the illative case instead, saying kaikkiin vierailijoihin?
Changing the object to the illative case would change the meaning of koskea to "to physically touch". Saying that a ban physically touches all visitors wouldn't make sense, which is why the partitive is required here.
How is the adverb ehdottomasti formed?
It stems from the noun ehto (condition). Adding the suffix -ton creates the adjective ehdoton (unconditional, absolute). Finally, the suffix -sti makes it an adverb. Notice how the stem changes to ehdottoma- before adding the adverb ending.
Why use vierailijoita instead of vieraita?
While both can mean "guests" or "visitors", vieras is a broader term that can also mean "stranger" or "foreign". Vierailija comes from the verb vierailla (to visit) and specifically means someone visiting a place or institution, which fits perfectly with the formal context of an official ban (kielto).
