Questions & Answers about Kosteus on vaarallista luolassa, jossa tippukivi kasvaa.
Why do we use jossa here instead of missä for the word "where"?
In standard written Finnish, the relative pronoun joka (and its local cases like jossa, josta, jonne) refers to a specific preceding noun, such as the physical location luolassa. The pronoun mikä (and its forms like missä) is instead reserved for referring to whole clauses, superlatives, or indefinite pronouns. While spoken Finnish casually uses missä for physical places, formal writing strictly requires jossa.
Why is vaarallista in the partitive case rather than the nominative vaarallinen?
The subject of the sentence, kosteus (moisture), is an uncountable mass noun. In a sentence where you describe what a subject is like, if that subject is an uncountable substance or an abstract concept, the adjective describing it must be in the partitive case.
Does the relative pronoun jossa have to match the case of the noun it refers to (luolassa)?
Not necessarily. A relative pronoun gets its case from its grammatical role in its own clause. In the second clause, the stalactite grows in the cave, requiring the inessive case jossa. It just happens to match luolassa, which is in the inessive because the moisture is also in the cave. If the first half were "I see the cave", it would be Näen luolan, jossa tippukivi kasvaa, mixing the accusative and inessive cases.
