Questions & Answers about Jos kukaan kysyy, aloitimme assistentteina.
Why does assistentteina have a double tt when the regular plural assistentit only has one?
The essive plural uses the strong consonant grade. The base word is assistentti. When forming most plural cases like the nominative (assistentit) or adessive (assistenteilla), the syllable is closed and the weak grade (single t) is used. The plural essive ending -na leaves the preceding syllable open, so the strong grade (double tt) is maintained in assistentteina. Additionally, the final i of the word changes to e before the plural i, resulting in -eina.
I usually see kukaan used with ei to mean "nobody". Why is it used here without a negative verb?
While kukaan is heavily used in negative clauses (ei kukaan = nobody), it is also the standard word for "anyone" or "anybody" in conditional clauses, such as those starting with jos (if), as well as in questions.
Why is there only a single t in aloitimme when the infinitive aloittaa has a double tt?
