Questions & Answers about Kunniavartion pitää suojella itse saattuetta.
Why doesn't itse match the partitive case of saattuetta?
When itse is used as an intensifying appositive pronoun to mean 'the thing itself' or 'in person', it does not inflect. It stays strictly in its base form right before the noun, regardless of what case the following noun is in.
Does the necessity verb pitää affect the case of the object saattuetta?
No, and this is an important exception to remember! Usually, a necessity sentence with pitää makes a total object take the nominative form instead of the genitive. However, the verb suojella (to protect) is a partitive verb that strictly requires a partitive object. This inherent verb requirement always overrides the special object rules for necessity sentences.
Why is kunniavartion in the genitive case?
It is the subject of the necessity verb pitää (must). In Finnish necessity structures, the logical subject who has the obligation is always placed in the genitive case.
What is the base form of saattuetta and how is it built?
The base form is saattue (convoy or procession). It is derived from the verb saattaa (to escort or accompany) by adding the suffix -e, which is frequently used to create nouns representing groups or collective entities (similar to joukkue for team).
