Questions & Answers about Rekrytoinnissa on tärkeää löytää osaaja, joka on hyvä tiimityössä.
Why is tiimityössä in the inessive case (-ssä)?
This is the core rule for adjectives expressing skill! Adjectives like hyvä (good), huono (bad), and taitava (skilled) require the noun to be in the inessive case. While in English you say you are good at teamwork, in Finnish you are good in it (hyvä tiimityössä).
Why is the adjective tärkeää in the partitive rather than the nominative tärkeä?
This happens because the actual subject of the sentence is the infinitive phrase löytää osaaja (to find an expert). When the subject of a "to be" verb is a generic action rather than a specific noun, the descriptive adjective must be in the partitive case.
How is the word osaaja formed?
It is a noun derived from the verb osata (to know how to do something, to have a skill). By adding the agent suffix -ja, it becomes a person who performs that action. An osaaja is literally "one who knows how", used widely in Finnish job markets to mean an expert, professional, or talent.
Why is the object osaaja in the nominative form instead of taking an accusative -n ending?
Since we are looking for one whole person, we do not need the partitive. We also do not use the -n accusative ending because the main structure on tärkeää lacks a specific personal subject. In these types of generic "it is necessary/important to do X" sentences, the total object of the infinitive remains in its basic nominative form.
