Questions & Answers about Kunpa olisimme toimineet toisin.
How does kunpa dictate the verb tense and mood in this sentence?
The particle kunpa (if only / I wish) introduces a hypothetical wish or regret, meaning it always requires the conditional mood. Because this sentence expresses regret over something that already happened, it uses the past conditional: the auxiliary verb olisimme (we would have) plus the past participle toimineet (acted).
Why is the main verb toimineet instead of the singular toiminut?
In compound forms like the past conditional, the main verb takes the past participle form. Because the subject is the plural "we" (indicated by the auxiliary olisimme), the participle must agree in number. Therefore, it takes the plural -neet ending instead of the singular -nut ending.
Where does the word toisin come from?
Toisin is an adverb meaning "differently" or "otherwise". It is actually an old, frozen form of the word toinen (other / second) in the instructive case. You will very often see it paired with verbs to express doing things another way, such as tehdä toisin (to do otherwise) or toimia toisin (to act differently).
Could I say jos vain instead of kunpa in this sentence?
