Wishes and regrets (kunpa)

Expressing Wishes with kunpa

To express strong wishes or hypothetical regrets ("if only..."), Finnish uses the particle kunpa. Sentences starting with kunpa always require the conditional mood (-isi-).

For past regrets, use the perfect conditional. Form this with the conditional of olla (e.g., olisin, olisit, olisi) paired with the past participle of the main verb.

if only
kunpa
If only I had known this in advance!
Kunpa olisin tiennyt tämän ennakkoon!

Reflecting and Acting Differently

When reflecting on the past, words like toisin (differently) and jälkikäteen (afterwards) are very common.

If only we had acted differently.
Kunpa olisimme toimineet toisin.
It is easy to act differently afterwards.
On helppoa toimia toisin jälkikäteen.

Present vs. Past Regrets

Use the present conditional for things you wish were different right now. For a negative wish in the present ("if only I didn't..."), use the conjugated negative verb (e.g., en, et, ei) before the main verb in the conditional.

If only I wouldn't lament my mistake.
Kunpa en harmittelisi virhettäni.

To express a negative regret about the past ("if only I had not..."), use the conjugated negative verb, followed by the fixed form olisi, and the past participle of the main verb.

If only I had not wasted my money on it.
Kunpa en olisi haaskannut rahaani siihen.

The Vocabulary of Hindsight

Discussing past mistakes involves specific vocabulary for speculation, such as myöhäinen (late), jälkiviisaus (hindsight), and ennakoida (to anticipate). You can combine these concepts with kunpa to express how things could have gone differently.

If only the warning had not been so late!
Kunpa varoitus ei olisi ollut niin myöhäinen!
Hindsight is always easy.
Jälkiviisaus on aina helppoa.
If only we had anticipated this situation!
Kunpa olisimme ennakoineet tämän tilanteen!
If only I had trusted my instinct!
Kunpa olisin luottanut vaistooni!
