Questions & Answers about Sinun on mahdoton välttää kulttuurišokki, jos jokainen ele on uusi.
Why is sinun in the genitive case here instead of the basic sinä?
This sentence uses an evaluative structure. When you want to say that it is easy, hard, or impossible FOR someone to do something, Finnish puts the person experiencing it in the genitive case. This creates the structure: Genitive subject + olla + Adjective + 1st Infinitive.
Why is mahdoton in the nominative form instead of the partitive mahdotonta?
It is a special exception for this exact structure! When you have a genitive experiencer (sinun), the verb olla, and a 1st infinitive (välttää), adjectives like helppo, vaikea, and mahdoton usually appear in the nominative case in standard Finnish. You will hear the partitive in casual speech, but the nominative is the traditional rule here.
Why is the object kulttuurišokki in the basic nominative form rather than the genitive-accusative kulttuurišokin?
This is a strict rule that often trips up learners: if the main sentence structure requires a genitive subject (like sinun here, or in necessity sentences like minun täytyy), the total object of the verb takes the nominative form instead of the genitive-accusative. Because the sentence is ruled by sinun, kulttuurišokki cannot take an -n ending.
The word kulttuurišokki has the letter š. Is this standard in Finnish?
