Questions & Answers about Jyrsijä on turhauttava.
How is the adjective turhauttava built from its root word?
It ultimately comes from the adjective turha (useless or vain). From there, we get the reflexive verb turhautua (to become frustrated), and then the causative verb turhauttaa (to cause frustration). Finally, adding the present active participle ending -va gives us turhauttava (frustrating).
What is the literal meaning of jyrsijä?
It literally means a 'gnawer'. It is formed from the verb jyrsiä (to gnaw or nibble) plus the agent suffix -jä, which is used to indicate the person or thing doing the action, much like '-er' in English.
Why is turhauttava in the nominative case here instead of the partitive?
Because the subject, jyrsijä, is a singular, countable noun. Even though 'frustrating' describes an abstract feeling, Finnish grammar requires the predicative adjective to be in the nominative case when the subject is an individual countable thing. If the subject were an uncountable concept or a general pronoun, we would use the partitive, like in Tämä on turhauttavaa (This is frustrating).
