Questions & Answers about Ammattiliitto vaatii, että työnantaja kuuntelisi meitä.
Why is the conditional verb kuuntelisi used here instead of a regular present tense verb?
This showcases the main rule for verbs of demanding or proposing like vaatia. When they are followed by an että clause, the verb in that clause must be in the conditional mood, recognized by the -isi- marker. This shows that the action is a demand or wish, not yet a reality.
What happens to the meaning if I accidentally say että työnantaja kuuntelee meitä?
While a native speaker might understand your intent, grammatically it sounds like you are demanding a fact that is already happening. The conditional kuuntelisi is required to express that the employer's listening is the desired outcome, rather than an already confirmed action.
Why is the pronoun for us in the partitive case (meitä)?
The verb kuunnella (to listen) inherently requires its object to be in the partitive case. Whenever you listen to someone or something, the target of that listening must take a partitive ending.
How do you break down the compound word ammattiliitto?
It is made up of ammatti (profession or trade) and liitto (union, alliance, or league).
