Learn Finnish: Ruutuaika on joustava, sikäli kuin teet läksyt ensin. - Screen time is flexible, insofar as you do the homework first.

While jos simply means "if", sikäli kuin translates closer to "insofar as", "provided that", or "to the extent that". It emphasizes that the first statement (flexible screen time) is strictly limited by or dependent on the condition in the second clause being met.

Since sikäli kuin is a conditional conjunction, why is the verb teet in the indicative instead of the conditional (tekisit)?

The conjunction sikäli kuin sets a condition, but it doesn't automatically force the conditional mood. Because doing the homework is presented as a real, expected action rather than an unlikely hypothetical scenario, the speaker uses the standard present indicative teet (you do).

Why is the word for homework, läksyt, in the plural?

Unlike English, where "homework" is an uncountable singular noun, Finnish treats homework as countable individual tasks. You almost always use the plural läksyt when talking about schoolwork. Grammatically, it is in the nominative plural, acting as the total object of the verb teet.

The word joustava means "flexible". How is this word formed?
