Questions & Answers about Me olemme halukkaita päivystämään tänä viikonloppuna.
Why do we use the 3rd infinitive illative form päivystämään here instead of the basic infinitive päivystää?
Adjectives that express willingness, readiness, or ability, such as halukas, valmis, or kykenevä, dictate that the following verb must be in the 3rd infinitive illative form (-maan/-mään). Here, the adjective halukkaita triggers this rule, turning päivystää into päivystämään.
Why is the adjective halukkaita in the partitive plural rather than the nominative plural halukkaat?
When the subject of a sentence with the verb olla (to be) is a plural pronoun or a group of people, the describing adjective must be in the partitive plural. Just as you would say me olemme suomalaisia or me olemme iloisia, you use the partitive plural halukkaita here.
Why is "this weekend" translated as tänä viikonloppuna using the essive case (-na) instead of a location case?
In Finnish, the essive case is the standard way to express points in time related to days of the week, weekends, and holidays to mean "on" or "during" that time. The pronoun tämä (this) must agree with the noun, taking its own essive form tänä.
How is the adjective halukas formed, and how does it become halukkaita?
