Questions & Answers about Toimitusjohtaja pyytää sijoittajia odottamaan, koska fuusio ei toteutune.
How is the negative potential ei toteutune formed in this sentence?
The negative potential is formed using the negative verb ei and the potential connegative stem of the verb toteutua (to materialize or happen). To find this stem, take the third-person plural present form toteutuvat, remove the -vat ending, and add the potential marker -ne. This gives us ei toteutune (probably won't materialize).
Why do we use the -maan form in odottamaan instead of the basic dictionary form odottaa?
The verb pyytää (to ask or request) requires the third infinitive illative form (-maan or -mään) when you are asking someone to do an action. Therefore, asking someone to wait translates to pyytää odottamaan.
Why is the word for investors, sijoittajia, in the partitive plural case?
It acts as the object of the verb pyytää. When you ask or request someone to do something, the person being asked is typically in the partitive case. Here it is plural because the CEO is addressing multiple investors.
Could I say koska fuusio ei varmaan toteudu instead of using the potential mood?
Yes, you absolutely could! In modern spoken Finnish, it is much more common to express probability using an adverb like varmaan or ehkä with the standard negative present tense (ei toteudu). The potential mood (ei toteutune) is mostly reserved for formal writing, news, or literature.
