Questions & Answers about Tämän kappaleen esittää uusi bändi.
Why does the English translation use the passive voice ("is performed by") if the Finnish verb esittää is in the active voice?
Finnish often uses Object-Verb-Subject (OVS) word order to shift the focus of a sentence. By putting the object Tämän kappaleen first, it becomes the topic, or what the sentence is about. English usually relies on the passive voice to achieve this same shifting of focus.
Why does the object Tämän kappaleen have the -n ending?
It is the total object of an active sentence. Because there is a regular subject (uusi bändi) performing the action, the total object takes the accusative case. For singular nouns, this case looks identical to the genitive case with its -n ending.
Is the verb esittää agreeing with the object at the start of the sentence?
No, it agrees with the subject, uusi bändi, which is in the third-person singular. Even when OVS word order pushes the object to the front of the sentence, the verb must always conjugate to match the grammatical subject.
I usually see kappale translated as "piece" or "paragraph". How do we know it means "track" here?
Kappale is a very flexible word that refers to a distinct unit of something larger. It can mean a physical piece, a paragraph in a text, or a track on an album. Here, the context of a band (bändi) performing makes "track" or "song" the only natural fit.
