Questions & Answers about Me vietämme vuosipäivää seitsemäntenätoista. Se on tärkeä päivämäärä.
Why is vuosipäivää in the partitive case?
The verb viettää (to celebrate or to spend time) requires its object to be in the partitive case. In Finnish, celebrating an occasion is thought of as an ongoing activity, so you use the partitive case for the event being celebrated.
What case is used in seitsemäntenätoista to mean "on the seventeenth"?
It is the essive case, which uses the ending -nä or -na. In Finnish, you use the essive case with days and dates to express when something happens, exactly like using the word "on" in English.
How exactly do we get the long form seitsemäntenätoista?
It comes from the ordinal number for 17th: seitsemäs (seventh) + toista (-teen). To add the essive ending -nä for dates, the word seitsemäs changes to its stem form seitsemänte-, giving us seitsemäntenä. The toista part is frozen and just gets tacked onto the very end without changing!
Why does vietämme have only one "t" when the dictionary form is viettää?
This is an example of consonant gradation. When we add the "we" ending -mme, it closes the syllable. This causes the strong double tt in the basic verb viettää to weaken to a single t.
