Questions & Answers about Tiedän, että netin selaaminen on vaivatonta.
Why is the word for internet in the genitive case (netin) here?
When you turn a verb into a -minen noun, the word that would normally be the object of the verb often becomes a genitive "owner" of the action. So instead of saying "browsing the internet," Finnish structures it as "the internet's browsing" (netin selaaminen).
How is the verbal noun selaaminen formed from the verb selata (to browse)?
Selata is a verb type 4. A handy trick to form a -minen noun is to look at the third-person singular form of the verb (hän selaa). You simply take that strong stem (selaa-) and add -minen to get selaaminen.
Why is vaivatonta in the partitive case instead of the basic nominative form (vaivaton)?
When the subject of a sentence is an action or an abstract concept (like selaaminen), the adjective describing it after the verb "to be" (on) must be in the partitive case.
How does the word vaivatonta break down into smaller parts?
The root word is the noun vaiva, which means "effort," "trouble," or "bother." The suffix -ton means "without" (like the English suffix "-less"), creating the adjective vaivaton (effortless). Finally, the -ta ending makes it partitive to correctly describe the abstract action of browsing.
