Learn Finnish: Tämä on mahtavin näköala! - This is the most awesome view!

The basic adjective is mahtava (awesome). To make it a superlative, we add the suffix -in. For words ending in -a or -ä, that final vowel drops out before adding the suffix. So, the base mahtava becomes mahtav-, giving us mahtavin.

Where is the word for "the most" in this sentence?

Finnish does not use a separate word for "most" in this structure. The superlative meaning is built directly into the adjective using the -in suffix. Mahtavin all by itself means "the most awesome".

Is näköala a compound word?

Yes! It combines näkö (sight or vision) and ala (area or field). Together, this "field of vision" translates nicely to "view" or "scenery".

What would happen to mahtavin if the noun was in a different case?

Adjectives must always match the case of the noun they describe. Right now, both are in the basic nominative form. If you wanted to say "from the most awesome view", you would use the elative case ending -sta. The stem of mahtavin changes to mahtavimma-, so the whole phrase would become mahtavimmasta näköalasta.
