Questions & Answers about Miksi näitä vanhoja laukkuja ei noudettu?
How do we form the negative past passive in "ei noudettu"?
Why does the verb "noutaa" change to have a "d" in "noudettu"?
This happens because of consonant gradation. When building passive forms for Verb Type 1 (verbs ending in two vowels, like noutaa), the stem becomes "weak". The strong t in the middle of noutaa softens to a d, which is why we get forms like noudetaan in the present and noudettu in the past.
Why is "these old bags" in the partitive plural (näitä vanhoja laukkuja) instead of the basic nominative (nämä vanhat laukut)?
The main reason is the negative sentence rule. In Finnish, if a sentence is negative, its object must be in the partitive case. Because there are multiple bags, we use the partitive plural. Even if the sentence were positive (were picked up), plural objects in passive sentences are always in the partitive case anyway!
How do we build the partitive plural endings for "vanhoja laukkuja"?
To form the partitive plural, we often add -ja or -jä. For words ending in -u like laukku, you just add the ending to get laukkuja. For words ending in -a like vanha, the final -a changes to an -o before adding the ending, resulting in vanhoja. Finally, the word for "these" is an irregular form you just have to memorize: tämä becomes näitä.
