Questions & Answers about Myyjä tekee nämä korut uusista metalleista.
Why do we use the elative case (uusista metalleista) to say "out of new metals"?
The elative case (ending in -sta or -stä) literally means "out of" or "from inside". In Finnish, when you are talking about the material something is made from, you use the elative case. Because there are multiple metals here, we use the elative plural.
Where does the -e- come from in metalleista? The basic word is metalli.
When forming the plural stem, the plural marker -i- is added to the word's stem. If a stem ends in -i (like metalli), the combination of the stem's -i plus the plural -i- changes to -ei-. Then we add the elative ending -sta, giving us metalleista.
How is the elative plural uusista formed from the word uusi (new)?
Words ending in -si, like uusi, have a plural stem that also happens to end in -si-. We add the elative ending -sta directly to it. So, the plural elative is uusista. (It looks just like the singular dictionary word with -sta added, but it is actually built on the plural stem!)
Why is the object nämä korut (these pieces of jewelry) in the normal plural form? Shouldn't objects be in the partitive or accusative?
In standard Finnish, the plural accusative (the case used when an action is completed on a whole object) looks exactly like the basic nominative plural, ending in -t. Because the seller is making these specific, complete pieces of jewelry, we use this total object form for nämä korut.
