Questions & Answers about Meillä ei ole näitä harjoja.
Why do we use näitä instead of the basic plural nämä here?
Näitä is the partitive plural of the word tämä (this). We use the partitive case because this is a negative sentence. When you say you do not have something in Finnish, the thing you do not have must always be in the partitive case.
How is the word harjoja formed?
It is the partitive plural of harja (brush). The plural marker here is -j- (which replaces the usual plural -i- because it sits between two vowels), and the partitive ending is -a. Notice how the pronoun näitä perfectly matches harjoja in case and number!
Why does the sentence start with Meillä instead of just Me?
Finnish does not have a direct verb for 'to have'. Instead, it uses a location structure meaning 'at someone is'. Meillä is the 'at us' form of me (we). So, the sentence literally translates to 'At us is not these brushes'.
