Questions & Answers about Nämä ovat uudet työkalut.
Why does uusi (new) change to uudet?
When making words ending in -si plural, the -si often changes to -de-. So the stem of uusi becomes uude-, and we add the standard plural -t to get uudet.
Why is the word for "these" nämä and not "tämät"?
The demonstrative pronoun tämä (this) has an irregular plural form. Instead of just adding a -t to the end, it changes completely to nämä (these).
Why do we use ovat here instead of on?
In standard written Finnish, verbs must match plural subjects. Since nämä (these) is plural, we use the plural verb ovat (are). However, keep in mind that in casual spoken Finnish, you will almost always hear people say nämä on instead!
Is työkalut a compound word?
Yes! It is made of työ (work) and kalu (tool, item, or gadget), plus the plural marker -t. Literally, they are "work items".
