Questions & Answers about Metsä on hiljainen. Mikään ei liiku.
Why is the word order Mikään ei liiku and not Ei mikään liiku?
When "nothing" is the subject of the sentence, the pronoun mikään usually comes first. It acts as the subject, followed by the negative verb ei, and then the main verb.
Does mikään mean "nothing" on its own?
Not exactly. By itself, mikään means "any" or "anything". It only means "nothing" when paired with a negative verb like ei. A literal translation of this sentence would be "Anything does not move."
Why doesn't the verb liiku have a personal ending?
Because it follows the negative verb ei. In Finnish, the main verb in a negative sentence drops its personal ending. For the verb liikkua (to move), you take the "he/she" form (liikkuu) and drop the final vowel to get the negative form liiku.
Could I use kukaan instead of mikään here?
Only if you specifically meant that no human beings were moving! Kukaan is used exclusively for people ("no one"). Mikään is used for things and animals ("nothing"), which makes the most sense in the context of a quiet forest.
