Questions & Answers about Anteeksi, oletko sinä opettaja?
Why is the ending -ko attached to the word olet?
The suffix -ko (or -kö) is how Finnish forms yes/no questions. By attaching it to the verb olet ("you are"), it flips the statement into a question: "are you?".
Does Anteeksi mean "sorry" or "excuse me"?
It means both! You can use Anteeksi to apologize for something, but it is also used to politely get someone's attention, just like "Excuse me" in English.
Why isn't there a word for "a" before opettaja?
Finnish doesn't have articles like "a", "an", or "the". The word opettaja can translate to "teacher", "a teacher", or "the teacher" depending on the context of the sentence.
Do I have to include the word sinä ("you") here?
No, it is optional. Because the verb olet already has the "you" ending (-t), it is completely clear who you are talking about. You could just say Anteeksi, oletko opettaja? and it would mean the exact same thing.
