Questions & Answers about Olen Suomesta.
Why does "Suomi" change to "Suome-" before adding the ending?
In Finnish, many old words ending in -i change that -i to an -e before adding case endings. So, Suomi (Finland) becomes the stem Suome-, and then we add the "from" ending -sta to make Suomesta.
Why is the ending -sta and not -stä?
This is because of vowel harmony. The word Suomi contains the back vowels u and o. Because it has back vowels, the ending must also use the back vowel a, making it -sta instead of -stä.
Where is the word for "I" in this sentence?
The verb olen already means "I am", with the -n ending telling us it's the "I" form. In Finnish, you can safely drop the pronouns minä (I) and sinä (you) because the verb ending makes it perfectly clear who is doing the action. Saying Minä olen Suomesta is also completely correct!
How would I ask "Where are you from?" using the grammar from this lesson?
You would use the question word mistä, which means "from where". The question is simply Mistä olet? (From where are you?). Notice how the question word also has the "from" ending!
