Questions & Answers about Ei, nyt ei sada.
Why is the verb sada instead of sataa?
Because the sentence is negative. To make a negative Type 1 verb, you use the negative verb (ei) plus the negative stem of the main verb. For verbs with consonant gradation, this stem is in the "weak" grade. Here, the strong t in sataa softens to a weak d, giving us sada.
Where is the word for "it" in "it is not raining"?
Finnish doesn't use a pronoun for weather verbs. While English requires a "dummy" subject to say "it is raining", Finnish simply uses the verb on its own. You just say sataa (rains) or ei sada (doesn't rain) without adding the word se (it).
