The Negative Verb

In Finnish, negation is expressed using a special "negative verb." Instead of attaching personal endings to the main verb, you conjugate the negative verb to match the subject (minä, sinä, etc.):

The Connegative Stem

To form a negative sentence, pair the conjugated negative verb with the connegative stem of the main verb.

For Verb Type 1, you find the connegative stem simply by taking the minä form of the verb and removing the final -n.

puhua (to speak) → minä puhun → puhu muistaa (to remember) → minä muistan → muista

Once you know this structure, you can easily combine it with question words like miksi (why).

Adverbs: koskaan and enää

When using adverbs like koskaan (never / ever) and enää (anymore), they are typically placed directly after the negative verb. Because koskaan means "ever," pairing it with the negative verb creates the meaning "not ever" or "never."

Weather Words

Weather phenomena often use third-person singular verbs. You can negate them using ei + the connegative stem. Notice that if the verb has a strong consonant, you still find its stem via the minä form:

paistaa (to shine) → minä paistan → paista sataa (to rain) → minä sadan → sada

Consonant Gradation in Negation

Because the negative stem is built from the minä form, it always uses the weak grade if the verb undergoes consonant gradation.

This is true for all pronouns. Even third-person subjects (hän, he), which normally use the strong grade in affirmative sentences, must use the weak grade in negative sentences.

Notice how the strong consonants disappear or soften in these negative sentences:
