Questions & Answers about Missä mies on, täällä vai tuolla?
Why is vai used for "or" here instead of tai?
In Finnish, vai is specifically used for "or" in questions where you are asking the listener to choose between specific options. Because this is a direct question asking "here" OR "there", you must use vai. You use tai for "or" in regular statements.
I've also seen tässä for "here". Why does this sentence use täällä and tuolla?
täällä (here) and tuolla (there) are used for larger, less specific areas, like a general vicinity. Words like tässä (right here) and tuossa (right there) refer to a very exact point or a spot you can point your finger at. Since we're asking generally where the man is, the broader täällä and tuolla are a natural fit.
Why is the verb on at the end of the first part (Missä mies on)? Shouldn't it be "Missä on mies"?
In English, we swap the subject and verb in questions ("Where is the man?"). In Finnish, questions starting with a question word (like Missä) often keep the standard Subject + Verb word order. So, it translates more literally to "Where the man is".
