Questions & Answers about Tämä koira on myös väsynyt.
Why do we use on in this sentence?
on is the form of the verb to be used for the third-person singular. This includes hän (he/she) from this lesson, but it also applies to animals and objects like koira (dog).
If I wanted to replace tämä koira with a pronoun, would I use hän?
In standard written Finnish, you would use se (it) because dogs are animals, whereas hän is strictly for people. However, they both use the exact same verb form, on.
Why is myös placed right before väsynyt?
In Finnish, myös (also) is usually placed immediately before the word it emphasizes. Because the sentence points out that the dog is also tired, myös sits right next to väsynyt.
Why are tämä and koira both in their basic dictionary forms here?
They are in their basic forms because tämä koira is the subject of the sentence. In Finnish, words like tämä (this) must match the noun they describe, so if koira ever changed its ending for a different grammar rule, tämä would have to change its ending too.
