To express calling someone a name or giving them a title, use the verbs sanoa and kutsua. The person being named (the object) is always in the partitive case.
Labeling with sanoa
With sanoa (to call), the title they receive is in the translative case (ending in -ksi).
| The grand master drank the wine and called me a brother. | Suurmestari joi viinin ja sanoi minua veljeksi. |
| You must initiate him, and then the brotherhood calls him a master. | Sinun täytyy vihkiä hänet, ja sitten veljeskunta sanoo häntä mestariksi. |
Labeling with kutsua
With kutsua (to call), the title takes the essive case (ending in -na or -nä).
| I am not a traitor, even though you call me a novice. | En ole petturi, vaikka te kutsutte minua noviisina. |
| Do they call you a grand master when you wear the hood? | Kutsuvatko he sinua suurmestarina, kun sinä pidät huppua? |
| I demand loyalty from the novice, that we may call him a brother. | Vaadin noviisilta uskollisuutta, jotta voimme kutsua häntä veljenä. |
