### The Abessive Case: Living "Without"

To express that you are doing something *without* a certain thing, Finnish uses the **abessive case**. While you can also use the preposition *ilman* (without) + partitive, the abessive case is very common in written Finnish, established expressions, and when discussing minimalist or off-the-grid lifestyles.

To form the abessive, take the noun's genitive form, drop the final **-n**, and add **-tta** or **-ttä** (depending on vowel harmony).

### Abstract Nouns and Adverbs

The abessive is especially common with abstract nouns. Adding *-tta/-ttä* to words like *huoli* (worry) or *stressi* (stress) essentially turns them into adverbs of manner, describing exactly *how* an action is performed.
