The Abessive Case: Living "Without"
To express that you are doing something without a certain thing, Finnish uses the abessive case. While you can also use the preposition ilman (without) + partitive, the abessive case is very common in written Finnish, established expressions, and when discussing minimalist or off-the-grid lifestyles.
To form the abessive, take the noun's genitive form, drop the final -n, and add -tta or -ttä (depending on vowel harmony).

Abstract Nouns and Adverbs
The abessive is especially common with abstract nouns. Adding -tta/-ttä to words like huoli (worry) or stressi (stress) essentially turns them into adverbs of manner, describing exactly how an action is performed.

Giving Things Up
When discussing a minimalist lifestyle, you will often talk about reducing kulutus (consumption) and giving things up.
The verb luopua means "to give up" or "to relinquish." It requires the thing being given up to be in the elative case (-sta/-stä).
