"After" Clauses with Different Subjects
When narrating events in sequence ("After X happened, Y did something"), Finnish uses a compact structure if the "after" action has a different subject than the main sentence.
To build this:
- The subject of the first action goes into the Genitive case (ending in -n).
- The verb takes its passive past participle form, plus a partitive ending (-a or -ä), creating endings like -tua, -tyä, -ttua, or -ttyä.
For example, saapua (to arrive) becomes saavuttua.
| After the icebreaker arrived, the sea ice began to crack. | Jäänmurtajan saavuttua merijää alkoi halkeilla. |
Varying Verb Endings
Because this structure is built on the passive past participle, the exact consonant pattern before the -a or -ä depends on the verb type:
- avautua (to open) becomes avauduttua
- lähteä (to leave) becomes lähdettyä
| After the channel opened, the icebreaker continued toward the North Pole. | Väylän avauduttua jäänmurtaja jatkoi kohti pohjoisnapaa. |
| After the captain left, I pulled the sled carefully. | Kapteenin lähdettyä minä vedin rekeä varovasti. |
Forces of Nature
The grammar works exactly the same whether the subject is an icebreaker, a person, or the weather. Simply put the subject (even a natural force) into the Genitive case.
For example, myrsky (storm) becomes myrskyn, and jää (ice) becomes jään.
| After the storm ended, the expedition left in the freezing wind. | Myrskyn loputtua retkikunta lähti hyytävässä tuulessa. |
| After the ice broke, the sled dogs stopped. | Jään murruttua vetokoirat pysähtyivät. |
| After the sun set, the sled dogs continued the journey toward the North Pole. | Auringon laskettua vetokoirat jatkoivat matkaa kohti pohjoisnapaa. |
Changing Conditions
This structure is highly versatile for narrating shifting situations on the ice, from a ship changing direction to medical emergencies like frostbite (paleltuma).
| After the icebreaker turned, the channel began to freeze again. | Jäänmurtajan käännyttyä väylä alkoi taas jäätyä. |
| After the frostbite worsened, the doctor examined the expedition's leader. | Paleltuman pahennuttua lääkäri tutki retkikunnan johtajan. |
