The Means of Action: "By doing"
To express how a goal is achieved—like "by reading" or "by listening"—Finnish attaches the ending -malla or -mällä directly to the verb.
Forming the "-malla/-mällä" Structure
This is called the third infinitive adessive. To form it, take the he (they) form of the verb, drop the -vat or -vät, and add -malla or -mällä.
