Questions & Answers about احترام به ایشان لازم است.
The translation says "Respect for them," but could "ishân" refer to just one person here?
Yes! As we are learning in this lesson, ishân is frequently used to mean a formal or highly respectful "him" or "her" (such as for a professor or elder), rather than just a literal plural "them." Using ishân for a single person elevates the respect level significantly compared to the standard pronoun u.
Why is the preposition "be" used here instead of connecting the words with an ezafe?
The noun ehtrâm (respect) naturally pairs with the preposition be (to) to show who is receiving the respect. While ehtrâm-e ishân could mean "their respect" (the respect they personally hold or show), saying ehtrâm be ishân literally means "respect to them/him/her," which removes any ambiguity.
Is this exact sentence structure common in casual, everyday conversation?
It is quite formal. In everyday spoken Farsi, people usually use the compound verb ehtrâm gozâshtan (to show respect) rather than using respect as a standalone subject noun. A natural spoken equivalent would be something like ehtrâm gozâshtan beheshun lâzeme, replacing the formal ishân with the colloquial attached pronoun -eshun.
