Learn Farsi: دانشگاه نامزد اصلح را با معدل اعلی می‌پذیرد. - The university accepts the most qualified candidate with the highest GPA.

It uses the Arabic af'al morphological pattern, which inherently acts as a comparative or superlative adjective (an elative). It is built from the root letters s-l-h, which relate to being proper or suitable, so putting it into this pattern automatically creates the meaning of 'most suitable' or 'most qualified'.

Is a'la also an Arabic elative adjective on the af'al pattern?

Yes, it is the elative form of the root for 'high,' meaning 'highest' or 'supreme.' Because its root ends in a weak letter, it ends with a vowel sound (often written with a final yaa instead of alef) rather than a hard consonant, but it functions exactly like standard af'al superlatives such as aksar or ahamm.

Why do these Arabic superlatives come after the noun with an ezafe, unlike native Farsi superlatives?

This is a crucial structural difference to remember. Native Farsi superlatives ending in -tarin always come right before the noun with no ezafe (for example, behtarin namzad). However, Arabic elative adjectives on the af'al pattern are usually treated like regular descriptive Farsi adjectives, meaning they come after the noun and are linked by an ezafe, as seen here in namzad-e aslah and mo'addel-e a'la.

I learned namzad as meaning 'fiancé' or 'fiancée.' How does that fit into a sentence about a university?
