Questions & Answers about او در تله است، شاید فریبش داده باشند!
Why is the object pronoun attached to the middle of the verb as farib-ash?
This is a perfect example of enclitic insertion in compound verbs. Instead of using the independent pronoun and object marker (u ra farib dade bashand), Farsi speakers often attach the pronoun ending (-ash for 'him') directly to the noun portion of the compound verb (farib). This structure is extremely common in everyday Farsi.
Could we attach the -ash enclitic to the very end of the sentence instead, like farib dade bashand-ash?
No, that would sound highly unnatural. In compound verbs, pronoun enclitics almost always attach to the nominal (non-verb) component, which is farib here. Attaching an enclitic to the end of a multi-word verb tense like the present perfect subjunctive is incorrect.
Why is the verb dade bashand instead of a regular past tense like dadand?
The word shayad (perhaps) forces the verb into the subjunctive mood. Because the speaker is speculating about an action that already happened, they use the present perfect subjunctive. It is formed with the past participle (dade) plus the present subjunctive of 'to be' (bashand).
There is no word for 'they' in the second half of the sentence. Who does the 3rd person plural ending in bashand refer to?
It does not have to refer to specific people. Just like in English, Farsi frequently uses a subjectless 3rd person plural to express a general 'they' or 'someone.' It functions similarly to a passive voice here, meaning 'perhaps he has been tricked' or 'perhaps someone tricked him.'
