Questions & Answers about کلیسا نزدیکِ خانه‌ی ما است.

Why does نزدیک (near) need an ezafe (the "e" sound) to connect to خانه‌ی ما?
Many Farsi prepositions of place, like نزدیک (near), زیر (under), or پشت (behind), function grammatically like nouns. Because of this, they use the ezafe to connect to the noun that follows them, much like how you link two nouns together. You can think of it as literally saying "the near of our house".
There is no word for "the" before کلیسا, so how do we know it means "the church" and not "a church"?
Farsi does not have a direct translation for the definite article "the". When a bare noun like کلیسا is the main subject at the beginning of a sentence, it is naturally understood to be definite ("the church"). If the speaker specifically meant "a church", they would have added an indefinite marker, such as یک کلیسا (yek kelisā) or کلیسایی (kelisā-yi).
Why is the letter ی added to the end of خانه (house) before ما (our)?
The word خانه (khāne) ends in a silent ه, which produces an "e" vowel sound. To link "house" to "our", we need the ezafe linking vowel. Because you can't comfortably pronounce two vowels back-to-back, Farsi adds a "y" consonant sound to bridge them. In writing, this is shown by adding the letter ی (or sometimes just a small symbol over the ه), making it خانه‌ی ما (khāne-ye mā).
How would a native speaker actually say this sentence in everyday, casual conversation?
In spoken Farsi, the formal word خانه (khāne) is almost always pronounced as خونه (khune). Additionally, the formal "is" verb است (ast) is usually shortened and attached directly to the preceding word. A native speaker would typically say: کلیسا نزدیک خونه‌ی ماست (kelisā nazdik-e khune-ye mā-st).
