How is the word for "eighth" (hashtom) formed from the number eight?
You make this type of ordinal number (first, second, third, etc.) by simply adding the suffix -om to the end of a regular number. Here, hasht (eight) becomes hashtom (eighth).
Why does hashtom come after the word for lesson (dars)?
In Farsi, ordinal numbers ending in -om act exactly like regular adjectives. Because adjectives come after the noun they describe, hashtom must follow dars.
Why is there an "e" sound connecting dars and hashtom?
That is the Ezafe! Because hashtom is acting as an adjective following a noun, you must link the two words with this short "e" sound. So, you say dars-e hashtom. Without the Ezafe, the phrase would sound grammatically broken.
Could I say "the eighth lesson" with the number placed before the noun, like in English?
You can, but you would have to use a slightly different ending for the number. If you want to place the ordinal number before the noun (and drop the Ezafe), you must add -omin to the number instead, making it hashtomin dars. Since this sentence uses the -om ending, it has to go after the noun.
