Questions & Answers about همینطور است.
What does hamin-tor literally mean, and why does the translation say 'that' instead of 'this'?
The word hamin means 'this exact' or 'this same', and tor means 'way' or 'manner'. Literally, the sentence means 'it is this exact way'. In English, we usually agree by saying 'that is how it is', but Farsi uses the word for 'this' because the topic is immediately present in the conversation.
How does hamin-tor relate to the adverbs we are learning in this lesson?
While this lesson focuses on Arabic loanwords taking the -an suffix to become adverbs (like vâqe'an for 'really'), Farsi also builds adverbial phrases by combining native words. Adding tor (way) to a demonstrative like hamin creates a phrase that acts just like an adverb, meaning 'likewise' or 'in this way'.
Can I just say hamin ast instead of hamin-tor ast?
They are used differently. hamin ast simply means 'it is this', which you use when pointing to a specific physical object. Adding tor shifts the meaning to 'it is this way' or 'that is how it is', which is used to describe a situation or to strongly agree with a statement someone just made.
How is this sentence pronounced in casual, spoken Farsi?
In everyday speech, the verb ast is usually shortened to an 'eh' sound and attached to the previous word. You will commonly hear this entire phrase pronounced as hamin-toreh.
