Does خداحافظ have a literal meaning?
خداحافظ is actually made of two words: خدا meaning "God", and حافظ meaning "protector" or "keeper". So when you say goodbye, you are literally saying "May God be your protector."
Can I shorten خداحافظ in everyday conversation?
Yes! While خداحافظ is the correct written form, in casual speech Iranians usually drop a syllable and just say خدافظ (khodaafez).
