Questions & Answers about آیا تندیس را به مدیر، نابغهی نامدار، دادید؟
Why isn't there an Ezafe connector between modir and nabeghe?
This showcases noun apposition (Badal). Here, nabeghe-ye namdar (the renowned genius) is an appositive phrase that renames modir (the manager). Instead of using an Ezafe to link them, Farsi uses a pause (indicated by the comma) just like in English. If we used an Ezafe and said modir-e nabeghe, it would mean the genius manager rather than giving him a separate title.
Why does nabeghe get a -ye sound added to it in nabeghe-ye namdar?
The word nabeghe (genius) ends in a silent he which makes an e sound. When we want to connect it to the adjective namdar (renowned) using an Ezafe, we cannot just add another e vowel. We have to use the consonant y as a bridge, making it nabeghe-ye.
Why is the object marker ra attached to tandis and not later in the sentence?
The word ra marks the specific direct object of the verb. In this sentence, the action of giving (dadid) is being done directly to the statuette (tandis). The manager is the indirect object receiving the statuette, marked by the preposition be (to). Therefore, ra must immediately follow tandis.
Do I always have to use aya at the beginning of a yes/no question?
No, aya is optional and mostly used in formal writing or polite speech. In everyday spoken Farsi, you can drop aya completely and just raise your tone of voice at the end of the sentence to show it is a question.
