Questions & Answers about این جایزه برای همکار من، مخترع معروف، است.
Why is there no Ezafe connecting همکار من and مخترع معروف?
This is called noun apposition (Badal). Because مخترع معروف (the famous inventor) is just an alternative title or extra description for the exact same person, you don't link the two phrases with an Ezafe. Instead, they sit side-by-side, usually separated by commas.
Are there still Ezafes inside the individual phrases?
Yes! There is a possessive Ezafe between همکار and من (hamkar-e man), and a descriptive Ezafe between مخترع and معروف (mokhtare'-e ma'ruf). The rule for this lesson only stops an Ezafe from connecting the two separate phrases together.
Why is the verb است separated from the rest of the sentence by a comma?
The core sentence is simply این جایزه برای همکار من است (This award is for my colleague). Because Farsi puts the verb at the end, the extra descriptive phrase gets inserted right after the noun it describes. This pushes the verb است to the very end, right after the closing comma.
Are the commas actually required in written Farsi here?
Yes, just like in English, commas are used in written Farsi for this kind of apposition. They clearly show that it is an inserted description. Without the commas, a reader might be confused and assume you simply forgot an Ezafe.
