Questions & Answers about من به هنر علاقه دارم.
How does this connect to the suffix -mand from our current lesson?
This sentence uses the noun علاقه (interest) paired with the verb دارم (I have). However, you can express the exact same meaning using the adjective form you just learned! By adding the suffix -mand to علاقه, you get the adjective علاقهمند (interested). You could rewrite this sentence as من به هنر علاقهمند هستم (I am interested in art). Both versions are perfectly natural.
Why do we use the preposition به (to) instead of a word for "in"?
Prepositions often don't translate word-for-word between English and Farsi. The compound verb علاقه داشتن (to have an interest) and its adjective counterpart علاقهمند بودن (to be interested) both strictly require the preposition به. Literally, you are saying "I have interest to art."
Why is به هنر (in art) placed before علاقه (interest) in the sentence?
While you might sometimes hear people say من علاقه به هنر دارم, the word order in this example sentence is the most natural standard. In Farsi, a prepositional phrase (like به هنر) typically goes right before the compound verb block (like علاقه دارم).
Should هنر (art) be plural here if I mean "the arts" in general?
No, it shouldn't. When referring to the general, abstract concept of "art", Farsi uses the singular noun هنر, exactly like English does. You would only use the plural هنرها (the arts) if you were explicitly talking about multiple, distinct artistic disciplines (like painting, sculpture, and music together).
