Questions & Answers about دو همکار وقت اضافهکار گپ میزنن.
Why does the verb میزنن end in -an instead of -and?
This is the colloquial Tehrani pronunciation taught in this lesson! The standard written 3rd-person plural ending -and drops the final d in spoken Farsi, becoming -an. So, standard میزنند (they chat) is pronounced and often written informally as میزنن.
Why is همکار singular when the English translation says two colleagues?
In Farsi, nouns that come directly after numbers always remain in their singular form. Even though we translate it as the plural colleagues, you must say دو همکار (two colleague) rather than adding a plural suffix like -ها.
How is during expressed here? I do not see a separate word for it.
The word وقت means time, and it is linked to اضافهکار (overtime) with an unseen ezafe (an e sound). So وقت اضافهکار literally means the time of overtime. In English, we naturally translate this phrase as during overtime.
What is the literal meaning of گپ میزنن?
It is a compound verb made from گپ (chat or conversation) and the present tense of زدن (to hit or strike). Farsi uses زدن as the helper verb for many actions involving talking or making sounds, so hitting a chat means to converse.
