Questions & Answers about شوهر او دکتر است.
How do we connect "husband" (شوهر) and "her" (او) if there is no separate word for "her"?
They are linked by a hidden "e" sound called the Ezafe. When you say it out loud, it sounds like shohar-e oo. In Farsi, to say "her husband" (or "the husband of her"), you put the noun first, add the "e" sound, and then add the pronoun.
The word او usually means "he" or "she". How do we know it means "her" here?
Farsi pronouns do not have gender, so او can mean "he", "she", "him", or "her". Because it is attached to "husband" using the Ezafe, it acts as a possessive pronoun meaning "her" (or "his", depending on context).
The English translation says "a doctor", but there is no word for "a" in the Farsi sentence. Why?
In Farsi, when you state someone's profession, you usually do not need to use the word for "a" or "an" (یک). You simply state the person, the profession, and then the verb.
Why is the verb است ("is") at the very end of the sentence?
Farsi has a different word order than English. The verb almost always goes at the very end of the sentence. So instead of saying "Her husband is doctor", a Farsi speaker literally says "Her husband doctor is".
