Questions & Answers about درس اول آسان است.
Why does "first" (avval) come right after "lesson" (dars)?
In Farsi, ordinal numbers (like first, second, third) can be placed directly after the noun they describe. When they follow the noun like this, they act just like adjectives, so you must connect them using the invisible "e" sound known as the Ezafe. This makes it dars-e avval.
The lesson is about ordinal numbers ending in "-om", so why doesn't avval end that way?
Avval (first) is an exception! It is an Arabic loanword and is the most common way to say "first" in Farsi. The regular Farsi equivalent is yekom (from yek, meaning one), but avval is used much more frequently. It still follows the exact same grammatical rules as the "-om" numbers.
Where exactly is the Ezafe in dars-e avval?
It attaches to the end of dars (lesson). Even though it's not explicitly written in the standard Farsi alphabet, you must pronounce the "e" sound to link the noun to its number: dars-e avval. Without the Ezafe, just saying "dars avval" would sound disconnected and grammatically incorrect.
How should I pronounce the double "v" in avval?
Avval has a doubled consonant sound, which in Farsi grammar is marked by a symbol called a tashdid (though it's rarely written out in everyday text). When you say it, you should hold or emphasize the "v" sound slightly longer than you would a normal "v".
