Questions & Answers about پنجره بالای در است.
Why is there a ی (ye) attached to the end of بالا (bâlâ)?
بالا (bâlâ) means "above" or "up". To link this spatial word to the noun that follows it (در, the door), we need the connecting sound called the Ezafe. Because بالا ends in a vowel, the Ezafe becomes a full "ye" sound and is written with the letter ی. It acts like saying "the above of the door".
در (dar) often means "in". How do I know it means "door" here?
You have to look at the surrounding words! Since it comes right after the spatial preposition بالای (bâlâ-ye, above), it has to be a noun here. "Above in" wouldn't make sense, so it must be the noun در meaning "door".
There are no words for "the" in the Farsi sentence. How do we know it means "the window" and not "a window"?
Farsi doesn't have a separate word for "the". A plain noun like پنجره (panjere) is automatically understood as specific ("the window") unless you add a suffix to make it indefinite, like پنجرهای (panjere-i, "a window").
Why does است (ast) come at the very end of the sentence?
In Farsi, verbs almost always go at the very end of a sentence. The standard word order here is Subject (پنجره, the window), then the Location (بالای در, above the door), and finally the Verb (است, is).
