کدام نامزد برنده‌ی انتخابات است؟

From Lesson 138:Agent nouns (-ande)·Farsi

Questions & Answers about کدام نامزد برنده‌ی انتخابات است؟

How does the word برنده show the rule for making agent nouns?
It comes from the verb بردن (to win or to carry). The present stem is بر. When we add the suffix -نده to a present stem, it creates a noun for the person doing that action. So بر plus -نده gives us برنده, meaning winner.
Why is there a ی at the end of برنده‌ی?
The ی is the ezāfe, which links the word for winner to the following word elections. Because برنده ends in a silent ه (an e sound), Farsi spelling rules require us to write a visible ی to hold the ezāfe, making it sound like barande-ye.
Is the word انتخابات a plural word?
Yes. The base word is انتخاب (choice or election), which comes from Arabic. In Farsi, many nouns borrowed from Arabic use the Arabic plural suffix -ات. So adding this makes انتخابات, which translates to elections.
Does the question word کدام always come before the noun?
Exactly. Just like in English, کدام (which) always comes directly before the noun it asks about. Here, it is placed right before نامزد (candidate) to mean which candidate.
I learned earlier that نامزد means fiance. Does it also mean candidate?
Yes, نامزد is commonly used for both fiance and candidate. In both cases, it refers to someone who has been nominated or put forward for a specific role, whether it is for a political office or a marriage!
