Questions & Answers about آیا شنیدید که مدیر امروز از سمت خود استعفا میدهد؟
Why is استعفا میدهد in the present tense when the main verb شنیدید is in the past?
In Farsi reported speech, we usually keep the tense that the original speaker used, rather than shifting it backward like we often do in English. The original news was 'The manager is resigning today' (present tense). So, even though you 'heard' it in the past (شنیدید), the verb after که (that) stays in the present tense: استعفا میدهد.
Why does the sentence use خود in سمت خود instead of a possessive ending?
خود means 'self' or 'own'. When the possessor is the same as the subject of the clause (in this case, the مدیر or manager), Farsi prefers to use خود to mean 'his own' or 'her own'. It emphasizes that he is resigning from his very own position.
Which preposition goes with the verb for 'to resign'?
The verb استعفا دادن, meaning 'to resign', pairs with the preposition از, meaning 'from'. Just like in English, you resign from a position: از سمت خود استعفا میدهد (resigns from his own position).
Do I always need to use آیا to ask a yes/no question like this?
No, you do not! آیا is a slightly more formal word used at the beginning of yes/no questions. In everyday spoken Farsi, people usually drop it and just use a questioning tone of voice, simply starting with شنیدید که...؟.
