Questions & Answers about بعضی از سبدها خالی بود.
We are learning about using بعضی (some). Why do we use از here instead of the Ezafe to connect it to سبدها?
Both ways are correct in Farsi! You can say بعضی از سبدها (some of the baskets) using از (from/of), or you can use the Ezafe and say بعضیِ سبدها (ba'zi-ye sabad-ha). Using از is very common in spoken Farsi and matches the English structure exactly.
Why is the verb بود (was) in the singular form when we are talking about multiple baskets?
In Farsi, when the subject of a sentence is inanimate (like objects, places, or ideas), the verb is usually singular, even if the subject is plural. Since سبدها (baskets) are objects, we use the singular verb بود (was) instead of the plural بودند (were).
Does بعضی از only work with plural nouns?
Yes, just like in English, when you mean 'some of the...', the noun that follows must be plural or an uncountable mass noun. That is why we use the plural سبدها (baskets) here. You wouldn't use a singular countable noun after بعضی از.
Is it possible to drop the ها and just say بعضی از سبد?
No, because you are referring to a selection from a larger group. You need the plural form سبدها to say 'some of the baskets'. If you drop the ها, it sounds grammatically broken, similar to saying 'some of basket' in English.
